Getting Started With YouTube
Like it or not, YouTube is the default video platform for online video. More than 2 billion people go to YouTube every month to access the content they want to watch. YouTube reaches more people in the US than any other TV network and is localized in over 100 countries and 80 different languages.
Over 1 billion hours of video are watched EVERY DAY! So, if you are making video, and you think you can forget about YouTube, you might want to think again. YouTube is a huge player in the online video space, and some would say it is the only player that matters.
Essentially, there are two ways to use YouTube: logged in or logged out. If you are not logged in with a YouTube account, you can still access all the content that is on the website. However, once you do log in, you can upload video, create playlists, subscribe to channels and more.
Best of all, you probably already have a YouTube account, whether you know it or not. Google owns YouTube so if you have a Google account, you have a YouTube account. Many teachers use their school Google accounts for educational YouTube channels and keep their Gmail accounts for personal YouTube channels.
In this class I will encourage you to log in to YouTube with your school Google account, even if you have never done this before. This will allow you to get a feeling for what it is like to manage videos and store things that you can use with your students. To get started, all you need to do is go to YouTube.com and click the SIGN IN button in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
If this is the first time you have logged in to YouTube with this account, you may be asked to set up your channel by choosing a name and/or profile picture. Go ahead and add any information that you are happy to provide. You can change it later, so don't spend too long thinking about it! :)
