The Modified Flipped Classroom
Ramsey Musallam, a science teacher, instructional coach, author, and consultant from California, was an early adopter of the Flipped Classroom ideology. However, he soon began to question whether or not it was the framework that his students needed to be successful. He asked himself how the information was constructed. Is it organized and applied by the student, and facilitated by the instructor? Or is it created by the teacher and delivered to the student?
In response, he developed the Explore, Flip, Apply model as a way to invoke more student inquiry into the flipped classroom model. In the context of a hybrid or distance learning model that many teachers are exploring right now, that meant introducing a topic and sparking student curiosity via a Zoom check-in, sending the students off to watch a video he created, then gathering them back together via Zoom to reflect.
